Hundreds Rally To Support Local Hospital

Nearly 400 local residents and health care workers gathered Saturday at Ajax-Pickering hospital to object to a takeover by the Lakeridge Health (Oshawa) hospital system.

The groups were protesting the Wynne government’s failure to honour the recommendations of an Expert Panel which would have created a new health corporation for all Durham sites.

Speakers included Dr. Stas, Associate Chief of Staff at A-PH, Warren ‘Smokey’ Thomas, OPSEU President, and Natalie Mehra, Coalition Executive Director, MPP Joe Dickson, Ajax Councillor Joanne Dies & Mayor Steve Parish and local citizens.

Dr. Stas pointed to the generous, long term support by the local community including a $5 million MRI and nuclear imaging equipment. Such facilities are usually paid through hospital funds. He also stated that a stand alone local hospital would be ‘ideal’.

Ms Mehra stated that mergers in other parts of Ontario inevitably result in a reduction of services to the local community. Provincial regulations dictate that duplicate services can’ t be offered in the wider region. ‘Neither the larger nor the smaller hospitals benefit’. One community has the danger & costs of additional travel and the other is swamped by demands they can’t meet.

Mayor Parish referred to the Council’s support for the Friend’s call for implementation of the Expert Panel’s recommendations.

Mr. Thomas pledged support for the local campaign.

Concerned citizens are urged to participate in local consultations and write to the Premier and Health Minister Hoskins.

Further actions are planned.

Nov. 23:

1.Minister’s Press release re hospital integration

2. Minister Hoskins Final Order for integration of Scarborough & Durham hospitals.

Comparison urged

What our community needs:

    * A new Durham Health Corporation which will represent ALL Durham hospitals.

(This is what an Expert Panel recommended & Scarborough got. The current plan is for Lakeridge Health Corporation to takeover our hospital. This is not the ‘voluntary’ arrangement promised).

    * A new board with fair representation from all Durham communities.

(Lakeridge’s takeover offers our community 3 members only of 16 elected Board members. This is unfair to the 40% of west Durham people living here).

    * A hospital to accommodate the population growth in west Durham.

(West Durham’s population’s projected to be 50% of all Durham’s population in 4 years. West Durham has one of Canada’s fastest growing populations).

     * a new system that will ensure every resident has the health services that they deserve.

(Our local hospital has capacity to serve only 1/3 of current population. Our Emergency Department is overflowing due to bed shortage. Present capacity can only admit 50% of those requiring admission).
